The Eight nonverbal codes of Communication
Kinesics:
Throughout the movie you see Mulan’s “feminine” aspects of kinesics
where she tries to keep eye contact in her conversations, including
those with the Captain where she leans in towards him and nods to show
how deeply she is listening to him. 29 min- time to show them your manhood. “shoulders back chest hight feet apart head up.” (kinesics in nonverbal communication)
Vocalics: Mulan must hide her feminine voice in order to blend with the male population in the army. She consciously changes her high pitched softer voice, to that of a lower pitch and she also increased volume of her speech. She also changes her language to a more masculine one making statements like, “Uhh, Sorry you have to see that, but you know how it is when you get those manly urges, and you have to KILL something.”
Haptics: Women are more likely to initiate touch, in the movie when the Captain has found out that his father have been murdered by the Huns, Mulan reaches out to him with her hand in order to gain a connection with him, which he at first feels uncomfortable with.
Chronemics: The use of time in nonverbal communication. For example when Mulan chose to bath by herself during a time in the day where she believed no one would be around. She also climbed the pole that every other soldier was unable to do in order to remain in the army. She wanted a place among the men, and she used time to learn their ways and adapt to the change between gender.
Physical Appearance: One of the biggest non verbal changes in Mulan is the change in Physical Appearance. Mulan goes from the scene where she is being dressed up with make up and flashy clothes to go meet a match making and find a husband to a woman who cut her hair off, wore male clothing and armor as she disguised herself as a male in the army.
Artifact: Mulan’s artifacts change greatly from when she wore a dress to impress the match maker with a delicate flower clip in her hair to a male’s suit of armor equipped with a sword. She also used her sword to try and make a connection with the Caption. Mulan states, “I see you have a sword. I have one too. There very manly and tough.”
Enviornment: Mulan is given little room, including a scene where she wanted to bathe and had to run from the rest of the troops in an attempt to get away. The army is not a place where space is free and open to everyone. The army is known for close barricades and uniformity. Mulan not only does not fit into the uniformity of the army, but being a women she requires more personal space in regards to sleeping and bathing.
Proxemics: The use of personal space and territory is clearly displayed in the army when the Captain stands over Mulan and she compresses her body away from him and his shadow over her. The idea of Power makes a strong influence on proxemic behavior. The more power one has (the Captain, other males, etc.) the more space will be violated.
